Who am I?
Hi I'm Kara Adkins, one half of Stackwood Studios and the one who takes the family photos usually :) I started shooting in 2006 after I moved back from California after getting my Photography degree from Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA. I worked for a bit out there as a professional retoucher, so I get to incorporate my love for the computer side of photography in with shooting. And as a new mom myself, making sure that other people have beautiful family photos has become really important to me. Now that I have my own little model, I am learning tricks to get little ones to look at me, be themselves, and give me their best smiles. I have 1.75 daughters (another coming in a couple months), and a standard poodle who doesn't leave my side.
My Approach
So I'm a photographer, right? I have at least 4 cameras just sitting around in my house. But most of the photos I have of my daughter are on my iphone.... I get it. It is hard to get everyone together, presentable, and most of all happy at the same time. That's why it is so important to get the time you have put into planning your shoot and make amazing photos!
I like to take kids to a place where they can let loose and explore a bit - a trail in the woods, a playground, a field, or a farm. These photos are sometimes my favorites because you get to see the little things that make them special and unique. That little glint he gets in his when he's about to do something that might not be OK, or that little smile she gets when shes being shy, or the way she looks at her daddy. Then we will try to wrangle them into some cuddle time with the family to get those interactions with mom and dad, and their siblings. A lot of time is spent on the shoot just playing with your kids to get them comfortable enough with me that they can be themselves so I can capture their true personalities.
Investment
One hour photo sessions start at $200 for most families. You can choose if you want to purchase prints, digital files, albums, or other products. A few times a year I will do some seasonal Mini sessions for people looking for just a few updated photos. These usually include some digital files or prints in the session fee and are $250.
